Before you begin

Get notes into files

Apple Notes does not offer a single “export all” control. Use the route available on your device, then bring the compatible files here.

For a large library: a Mac is the most practical route. Keep your original Notes library and any attachment export as a separate safety copy.

On a Mac

One-tap route (recommended): the Shortcut below syncs to Mac via iCloud — run “Back up my Notes” from the Shortcuts app or menu bar, then drop the exported files here.
Manual route: open Notes and choose a note.
On macOS Tahoe or newer, choose File → Export as Markdown and save it in a backup folder.
On an older macOS version, copy the note into TextEdit, choose Format → Make Plain Text, and save it as a .txt file.
Repeat for the notes you want, then drop the folder’s HTML, TXT, or Markdown files into this page.

On iPhone or iPad — one-tap Shortcut (recommended)

Open the Shortcuts app, tap +, and name it “Back up my Notes”.
Add the Find Notes action (leave the filter empty to match every note, or filter by folder).
Add Repeat with Each so it loops over the found notes.
Inside the loop, add a Text action: insert the Repeat Item variable twice — set one to Name and one to Body.
Add Set Name and set it to the note’s Name plus .txt.
Add Save File, turn off “Ask where to save”, and choose iCloud Drive → Notes Backup.
Run it once. Allow access to Notes and Files when asked. Locked notes are skipped, and attachments export as text only.
Back on this page, tap Choose files, tap Select in the Files browser, select everything in Notes Backup, then tap Open.

On iPhone or iPad — manual route

Open a note and tap the Share button, then choose Send Copy.
If your system offers Export as Markdown, save the .md file to Files.
Otherwise, copy the note into a text editor that can save a .txt or .md file in Files.
In this page, tap Choose files and select the exported files from Files.

Supported: .html, .htm, .txt, and .md. Remote images, scripts, styles, and attachments inside HTML are removed so opening the backup cannot contact another server. Embedded data images are retained.

Protect a copy with a passphrase

Creates a self-decrypting HTML file secured with AES-GCM encryption. The passphrase is never stored. If you forget it, the encrypted file cannot be recovered.
